What buyers of business templates complain about, and what we did about it

Before building our Notion templates, we read the written reviews on about 220 paid Notion templates for businesses: roughly 120 on Gumroad, through its public review pages, and 97 on the Notion Marketplace, in September 2026. Almost every product there averages between 4.7 and 5 stars, so low reviews are rare. They are also specific, and the same few complaints come up again and again.

Here they are, with what our products do about each one. The quotes are from reviews of other people's products; we have left the product names out.

"I had to read the manual before I could use it"

"I was hoping I wouldn't have to read the manual to understand how to edit this template." One-star review, Notion Marketplace.

Buyers measure setup in minutes to the first real entry, not in pages read.

What ours do: the guide for our flagship template, Lunith Commerce OS, opens on a seven-day Start Here path, one part a day, and day one is a single database. Inside the template, the home page says where to start and which parts can wait. Each printable PDF has a cover, then a one-page print sheet, and every page after that says at the top what it is for.

"It broke when I duplicated it"

"I cannot directly edit any of the tables and had to rebuild them myself and reverse engineer how they were linked." One-star review, Gumroad.

Complaints like this sit at one star, because the buyer cannot tell whether they did something wrong.

What ours do: the flagship's guide has a page of three checks to run straight after duplicating. Three example rows should read Net $7.09, Ledger orders 5 and Units sold 4. If any is blank, the relations did not come across, and the fix is to duplicate again from the link. If that fails, write to us and we will fix it with you.

"Too many databases. I did not know where to start."

"…I found it too complex with too many properties…" From a five-star review on Gumroad, by a buyer who then deleted and simplified a lot of it.

What ours do: the flagship has ten databases, which is a lot, so six are the core and four are modules that stay shut until you open them. Every example row is titled "Example:", so one search finds them all when you want them gone.

"Very basic for the price"

"I found it very basic for the price charged." Three-star review, Gumroad.

"Only contains manual entries in 3 financial databases with very limited usability." Four-star review, Gumroad.

In business templates, this complaint lands on the money side: a few empty finance tables where buyers expected arithmetic.

What ours do: the money layer is the part of the flagship to judge it on. Each storefront has its own fee row, every sale works out its own fees and net from that row, a busy storefront can be entered as monthly totals, and each storefront shows its effective fee rate and profit after ads. Entry is still manual, and the product page says so plainly.

"I changed something and it stopped working"

"Take the time to fully understand how it works before modding, unless you're proficient in Notion already." Five-star review, Gumroad.

What ours do: the flagship's guide marks, database by database, which properties are load-bearing, because a formula, a rollup or a relation reads them, and which are safe to rename or delete. Its last page is what not to break when you make the template yours.

"It was not what the pictures showed"

"As 'Life OS' was in the template description, I really thought that everything in the video was included." Two-star review, Gumroad.

What ours do: the flagship's pictures are screenshots of the real template, with its example rows and a line under each saying they are examples. Its product page has a list of what it does not do. There are no locked pages and no upsells inside the template.

"The creator never replied"

"…there is not a support or contact info to address this issue." One-star review, Gumroad.

What ours do: support is one email address, on the contact page and in every order email. If the flagship is updated, the update is additive and listed in its changelog, so nothing you rely on is renamed out from under you.

Where the evidence was thin

Phones. Few reviews complained about templates on phones as such; most complaints about phones were about the Notion app itself. We say plainly that the flagship is built for a desktop screen, rather than promising otherwise.

Printing. Third-party research that we did not re-check names missing print instructions as a cause of repeat questions and of pages clipped at the edge. Our printables come in US Letter and A4, each drawn at its own size, with a print sheet at the front.

Example data. Nobody in the reading complained that sample rows were hard to remove, and one reviewer praised "the thoughtful sample data already present". We kept example rows, and labelled them.

What we could not read

Reddit, and seller forums behind a login, could not be reached, so nothing from them is here. Rating counts were not treated as evidence either: a product can show dozens of ratings and only a handful of written reviews.
